The Legendary Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers are the oldest team in the NFL. Originally named for the India Packing Company who put up the money for jerseys and let them use the company athletic field, the team has never changed their name.
The idea for the small town team was born in 1919 when two men, Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun, had a conversation about starting a football team. Their first season was a success with ten wins and only one loss.
In 1921, the Green Bay Packers became a franchise, joining the National Professional Football League that had started the year before. Unfortunately, by the end of the season the team was broke and had to be forfeited…but that was not the last of the Packers. The next season, the team had five backers known as the “Hungry Five,” allowing them to continue to play through tough times.
The Green Bay Packers are one of the most accomplished teams in the NFL. They have won twelve championships, nine of which were in the NFL, giving them the most in the league. They have three Super Bowl wins to their credit. They hold records for the most league championships with twelve. They are the third oldest team in the NFL and are the only team that old to never have moved, remaining in Green Bay since the creation of the team.
Lambeau Field is home to the Packers and is the oldest football stadium in the NFL. After the renovations in 2003, the stadium still has its authentic retro feel. The original bowl is largely untouched, with remodeling efforts being mostly aimed at expanding the available seating. The stadium seats almost 73,000 people and features an atrium on the east side that is five stories high. The atrium houses various different amenities including the Packers Hall of Fame, Pro shop, dining, and many other features.
Indifference from the fans prompted the team to get rid of their official cheerleading squad in 1988. Since then, the franchise is one of few in the league that doesn’t have an official squad, although teams from two of the local universities are often seen at home games.
Being the only community owned professional sports franchise in the US, the Packers have a special bond with the people in their area. They are very involved with charity and outreach programs, even employing a staff to do nothing but organize the charitable appearances and contributions that are made throughout the year by the players and coaches. In the last year, the Green Bay Packers have donated over four million dollars in time, memorabilia, cash, and other contributions to their community.
Whether it’s on the field or off the field, the Green Bay Packers are one of the most respected teams in the NFL and they have worked hard to earn it. Between the community involvement and their amazing efforts on the field the people of Green Bay own an amazing piece of history in this team.
